About AI Chat Explorer

Last updated Jul 12, 2026

Three rules keep AI Chat Explorer independent: we buy our own accounts, no ranking can be purchased, and every platform is re-tested as it updates.
How the matrix stays honest: we pay our own way, rank cannot be bought, and we re-test.

Why AI Chat Explorer exists

Most “best AI companion” lists are ranked by who pays the highest affiliate commission. AI Chat Explorer is built on the opposite premise: every platform earns its place on the feature matrix by being tested, not by buying one. We pay for our own accounts, run every app through the same standardized tests, and score them on the same axes — so when one platform sits above another, the gap means something.

Who runs this

AI Chat Explorer is run by Dana Whitfield, who has spent the last two years hands-on with AI companion and roleplay platforms — from the mainstream names to the niche, unfiltered ones. The reason this site is a test bench and not a blog is simple: comparing AI companions on their marketing copy is useless. The only honest way to compare them is to use them, side by side, against the same prompts and the same scoring rubric.

How we stay independent

  • We buy our own accounts. No platform gives us a free upgrade in exchange for coverage, and no ranking on the feature matrix can be purchased.
  • No sponsored placements. Where we earn anything from a referral, it never changes a score or a rank — scores come from the test rubric, full stop.
  • We re-test. These apps ship updates constantly. A platform’s row on the matrix carries a “last tested” date so you know how fresh the verdict is.

How to read the feature matrix

The homepage matrix is the heart of the site. Each row is a platform; each column is a capability people actually ask about — voice calls, long-term memory, image generation, NSFW policy, free tier, and price. Sort by score or price, or filter by the one feature you care about. Every score traces back to our testing methodology. If you prefer the results written up, the full ranked scorecard and our true-cost pricing study cover the same data in depth.

Suggest a platform

Running a companion app we haven’t benched yet? We take requests for what to test next. The bench is always warming up — tell us what you want compared, and it goes into the queue.

Corrections

If a platform has shipped a change that makes one of our verdicts out of date, we want to know. Accuracy is the entire point of a test bench — when something is wrong, we fix it and update the “last tested” date.
